The two major rivers act as two veins that keep the city alive and where the inhabitants like to spend time. The Sava flows into the Danube in Belgrade. Around 1.7 million people live in the Serbian capital, which is still in a state of transition. The city, which was bombed and significantly destroyed by NATO forces in 1999 as part of the Kosovo conflict, is a city of contrasts: It is at the same time beautiful, ultra-modern, lively, very old, ramshackle and in some parts quite run-down.
Kajmak must not be missing from any Serbian dish
Our trip starts in the center of Belgrade with a typical lunch. In the restaurant "Mali Vrabac" we are served typical Serbian food. Lots of meat and of course kajmak, a thick, creamy dairy product prepared from fresh cow's milk: sometimes sweet, sometimes salty. It tastes good with everything that Serbian cuisine has to offer. But also Pirotska peglana kobasica, Čevapčići or Prebranac should not be missing on the table.

Nach dem Essen, das traditionell mit einem Rakija, einem aus Obst hergestelltem Schnaps, endet, geht es durch die Innenstadt von Belgrad in Richtung Kalemegdan zur großen Parkanlage der Festung von Belgrad. Die Festung liegt oberhalb der Mündung von der Save in die Donau. Von hier aus hat man einen tollen Blick auf das Mündungsdelta und die beiden Belgrader Stadtteile Zemun und Novi Beograd, das in den späten 40er Jahren bis in die 80er Jahre von verschiedenen bedeuteten Architekten errichtet worden ist. Hier steht auch eines der Wahrzeichen von Belgrad, der Genex-Turm, im Volksmund auch das Westtor von Belgrad genannt. Und es wird weiter gebaut und renoviert. Es entstehen weitere kreative Viertel, Bars und Restaurants. Die Stadt wächst und mit dem Wachstum kommt auch die Attraktivität für Urlauber und Einheimische.
Street art decorates downtown Belgrade
Von dort aus geht’s weiter durch die Stadt. Vorbei an Ruinen aus dem NATO-Angriff 1999, an heruntergekommen Häusern und schönen sanierten Gebäuden. Überall riecht es nach Popcorn, das in den zahlreichen Straßenständen verkauft wird. Und immer wieder sieht man herrliche, zum Teil absurde Wandgemälde an den Häusern. Street Art gibt es seit den 80er Jahren in Belgrad, damals noch Hauptstadt Jugoslawiens. Die Szene zog aus Berlin oder Paris in die Stadt und die ersten Graffiti-Künstler verewigten sich mit bunten Slogans oder Botschaften an den Wänden der Häuser. Erst als die Behörden mehrere Künstler beauftragten, großformatige Bilder an die Wände zu sprühen, etablierte sich Street Art als feste Größe in Belgrad. Vor allem im Stadtteil Vračar können zahlreiche Murals besichtigt werden. Das erste großformatige Wandgemälde ist der legendäre Student, der auf die Mauer schaut, den man in der Rajiceva-Straße zu sehen bekommt.
Nikola Tesla - the unknown genius
It continues to the Nikola Tesla Museum, which houses Tesla's urn and a large part of his estate. On the first floor of the villa in Belgrade's Vračar district there is a permanent exhibition illustrating the life of Nikola Tesla. In addition, there are several working exhibits that impressively prove to visitors what a genius Tesla was. He is considered one of the most ingenious inventors of all time, having registered over 700 patents including the electric generator, alternating current, radio, television, computer, remote control, electric cars, cell phone or the wheel. Tesla also invented a wireless transmission of electrical energy, which - according to some reports - is still boycotted by some major oil companies to this day.
Splavs and bars invite you to party
By now it has become dark in Belgrade and at dusk the city awakens. The nightlife is legendary, the white city, which means "Beograd" in Serbian, comes alive. People party in the numerous bars of the city or on the so-called Splavs, which are huge rafts that travel on the two rivers Sava and Danube and on which, especially in summer, one party boat follows the next. The party is over only when the sun rises again.
